Venturize now includes retirement and healthcare resources

We’re excited to announce that we recently expanded Venturize, our online resource hub for small businesses, to include our resources on healthcare and retirement. Small business owners and entrepreneurs can now access information about how to select the right retirement plan for their business, how to navigate small business healthcare options and much more.

Small Business Spotlight: Not Just Cookies, Chicago

While many 13-year-olds dream of becoming firefighters or football players, 13-year-old Johnathon Bush not only dreamed of being an entrepreneur but was already becoming one. While growing up in Toledo, he realized the only way to make money at a young age was through entrepreneurship, so he started baking cookies and selling them to friends and family. But, his bake sales evolved into something bigger than he could have expected.

On November 30 we will be joining the Small Business Administration and American Express in celebrating Small Business Saturday to encourage our local communities to shop local and to kick off the holiday season. Small Business Owners Say Government Doesn’t Understand Their Needs

Our recent state polling, conducted in Illinois, Missouri, Virginia and Wisconsin, found that only 12% of small business owners feel their state and federal government officials truly understand the needs and challenges of small businesses. They reported that healthcare costs and taxes are the biggest barriers to maintaining or growing their business.

CalSavers Retirement Savings Program

CalSavers is a portable, individual retirement account that is run by the state and allows employers to help their employees access a retirement savings program without incurring the time and cost typically associated with employer-sponsored retirement plans. CalSavers is easy to use and completely voluntary for small business employees while taking the administrative and fiduciary burdens off of employers.

On November 7, Vice President, National Outreach David Chase joined the Kauffman Foundation and the Center for American Entrepreneurship to brief staff from the House and Senate Entrepreneurship caucuses on policies to support entrepreneurship. We discussed America’s New Business Plan, a bipartisan policy guide to support America’s entrepreneurs, as well as the work we’re doing at the state and federal level to elevate the needs of small business.

VA small business owner testifies on the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act

On July 24, Virginia small business owner Muneer Baig testified before the U.S. House Committee on Small Business to explain why the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) hasn't helped his small business. Muneer explained that the TCJA did not save most small businesses any money, is too complex for most small business owners to understand without significant help from an accountant and did nothing to address pre-existing burdens for small businesses in the tax code.

Small Business Majority files amicus brief urging strike down of U.S. Department of Labor Rule

On Monday, July 22, Small Business Majority filed an amicus brief urging the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia to uphold a previous decision to strike down a U.S. Department of Labor Rule that makes it easier for groups to form association health plans. Rejecting this final rule is essential to protect the Affordable Care Act’s gains for small businesses, their employees and the self-employed.

Small Business Majority participates in CalSavers launch

On Monday, July 1, California Director Mark Herbert and small business owner Lorenzo Harris joined California Treasurer Fiona Ma and others for the official launch of CalSavers, the state’s new auto-IRA program. Mark and Lorenzo noted CalSavers will be good for small businesses by leveling the playing field for small firms that do not have the resources to offer the sort of comprehensive compensation packages typically available at larger businesses.

CEO John Arensmeyer weighs in on CalEITC proposed expansion

On Tuesday, June 4, CEO John Arensmeyer joined Governor Gavin Newsom for a roundtable discussion about the governor's budget proposal to expand the CalEITC program for those making up to $30,000, including the self-employed. John discussed how this proposal would support low-income entrepreneurs as they work to build their businesses. 

Small Business Majority testifies to reauthorize SBA Office of Advocacy

On May 22, 2019, Small Business Majority CEO John Arensmeyer testified before a joint hearing of the Senate Committee on Small Business & Entrepreneurship and the Senate Homeland Security & Governmental Affairs Subcommittee on Regulatory Affairs and Federal Management to discuss the reauthorization of the SBA Office of Advocacy. His testimony discussed the important role of the Office of Advocacy and why small business regulations should not be characterized as all good or bad, but rather considered on a case-by-case basis.
