Executive summary

The Agenda for America’s Entrepreneurs sets forth policies that empower America's diverse entrepreneurs to build a thriving and equitable economy. Spanning across three key pillars that underpin our work, we advocate for policies that increase equitable access to capital, foster a sustainable workforce and promote a level playing field for entrepreneurs. If implemented these policies would ensure the growth of a robust small business ecosystem, reduce barriers and expand access to the American dream.

Small businesses share concerns with recent banking closures, access to capital challenges

As recent banking closures like the Silicon Valley Bank collapse shake the financial system, Small Business Majority surveyed small business owners and decision-makers around the country to understand their concerns about banking and access to credit.

On March 29, Small Business Majority's California Policy Director Bianca Blomquist testified before the Senate Bank and Finance Committee on SB 33, legislation that could ensure small businesses continue to have the transparency they need when shopping for financing products.

On March 28, Johnathon Bush, owner of Not Just Cookies provided testimony before the Illinois House Financial Institutions and Licensing Committee on HB 2234, legislation that would extend consumer protections for small business borrowers.

On February 23, Small Business Majority's Public Policy Director Awesta Sarkash testified before the Connecticut Joint Committee on Banking in support of SB 1032, which would enact critical protections for small business borrowers in Connecticut that are falling prey to predatory lending practices.

Small Business Majority’s Outreach Team advocates for entrepreneurs on two fronts: It supports policies that benefit small firms and it offers workshops and events that help small business owners grow their companies. We have found this work to be even more important as small businesses experience rising inflation, supply chain disruptions and workforce challenges in the aftermath of the pandemic.

This week we are spotlighting Tasha Brown, Small Business Majority’s Midwest Director, to let small business owners know how our team members can assist them.

Small Business Majority and partner organizations in Georgia oppose legislation failing to require APR disclosures

On February 21, Small Business Majority, LISC Atlanta, New Town Macon, the Atlanta Wealth Building Initiative and Albany Community Together, Inc. submitted a letter to the Georgia House Committee on Banks and Banking in opposition to HB 84, legislation that would make Georgia small businesses vulnerable to non-transparent financing providers by failing to require all providers to disclose the annual percentage rate (APR) or estimated APR.

Colorado childcare provider weighs in on challenges for rural small businesses

Diane Hernandez knows from raising her own four children and one grandchild how hard it is to get quality childcare in her small, rural town of Julesburg, Colo. 

So after retiring from retail management, she decided to take a leap of faith and opened a home-based, licensed childcare business in January 2020.
